Wow, can’t believe you tackled Heather Lake this early in the season! I was up there last May and we were postholing the last third of the way through the snow. I have a shot of the same stump with tree growing out of it on my blog post about that hike. Great shots as usual!

I think it’s been a year or so since my last page…and I haven’t unpacked my scrapbook stuff yet, but I am making an office for it. I still come up with layout and content ideas all the time, but I just can’t find the motivation to sit down and actually make an album. For now this blog will have to function as my scrapbook, and hopefully I’ll return to paper soon enough!

I applaud you for how much hiking and getting out you are doing here in the Northwest! You put many of us “natives” to shame! Beautiful photos, too. I also see value in returning to my favorite hikes over and over. I treasure seeing how things change (or stay the same) through the year, getting to know a place intimately, letting it sink into your bones. I used to do as much hiking when I was your age(ish) before chronic tendinitis set me back and keeps me from doing as much as I’d like. Enjoy!

Wow! Your home is beautiful! I am loving that kitchen and the wood beams along the ceiling. I’m with you about a deck – Ours is my favorite thing about our house. Nothing beats coming home from a long day at work and lounging outside.

Kelsie: I hope to do the whole thing, at the very least I would love to do another solo section like last year!

k: We didn’t get to do as much as we would have liked up there since I was sick, but I recommend taking the ferry from Reine and walking to Bunesstranda – it should be an easy walk for most people. We took the bus from Å to Svolvær and it was a BEAUTIFUL drive. I would have loved to have a car so we could have stopped wherever we wanted for photos.. Hot tip: bring sleep masks, the midnight sun gets annoying after a while. ;^)

I’m going to Lofoten in June with my parents. My mom isn’t a huge hiker but she likes to walk and do easy hikes. Any suggestions on what to see when we are up there (currently only have train tickets to Bodø and plans to rent a car once we get onto the island so we could do/go anywhere!)?

Great posting and wonderful photos…but how did you get the blue sky on the 3d gps route? I’ve always had the default black sky but you’ve got a much more attractive/realistic blue. Did you paint that in or is there some setting to GoogleEarth?

Aaw, thanks Alex! We just moved into a new house, and after packing up all my boxes of scrapbooking stuff (sooo many boxes), I think I’m just going to get rid of most of the frilly stuff I never use and just keep the basics!

You’re going to love Design Your Life, I took it a couple of years ago and it was amazing! I usually lay my whole design out in Photoshop first, then print the text part on cardstock and the photos on photo paper. I try to plan ahead so I’ll have a couple of different pages to print photos for, that way I can squeeze as many as I can onto one sheet of photo paper.

I know your blog is more about hiking now, but I absolutely love your scrapbooking style! I, like you said in an older post, am afraid of looking back at this hobby ten years from now and thinking that the layouts are kitchy, messy etc.. with all the embelishents and things. As a result, I have piles of scrapbook stuff and nothing accomplished because I feel overwhelmed. I really like your clean, simple style.
Anyway, to help me along, I signed up for the Design Your Life Class. There are some odd picture sizes required and I was just wondering how you printed them out? I don’t have a photo printer. Did you resize them in photoshop? Cut them by hand? I was just looking for some guidance. Thanks!

This is GREAT! I truly believe that no child who spends time in nature will be fussy. There is magic in the outdoors and even babies know it.

Oh my gosh! How cute it Wellie! I love his argyle sweater. Jason is anti-dog clothing, although Thea does have a nice coat. Her hair is shorter and she’s quite a bit thinner than our lab Bailey, so she kind of needs it. And I agree about that first picture of him – Very cool!

I’ve had over-hydration issues ever since I had mono when I was fifteen. Seriously, I drink insaaane amounts of water, which gets annoying when I’m hiking or backpacking. The doc keeps checking to see if I have diabetes, but nope, I’m just always thirsty!

I love, love, love runs like that. There is something special about running in nature too. I believe (though I might be totally wrong on that one) that running is great for clearing sinuses. At least it works for me.
I am fine without water for runs shorter than 1.5hrs (unless it’s really hot). Sure, we need to be hydrated but I am thinking that a lot of ‘proper’ hydration advice is fueled by water bottling companies.

What an amazing month you had. I’ll let you in on a secret. Those tiny humans get fast awfully quick. Mine was that size just yesterday, I am sure it was yesterday. Now I can’t keep up with him.
XC skiing down is something I have yet to master but since we don’t have any snow… what is going on here?

Everest would be incredible! You should definitely do it!! Not only would it be an amazing experience, I’m guessing the courage to go it alone would be inspiring in itself.

I always love your trip reports – they make me wish I lived somewhere else :) The decision of what to share and of how personal to be is an individual choice. I, too, love reading blogs where people share about their day-to-day lives. It makes them real, and it often inspires me to live my life more fully.

OMG what a gorgeous hike! I’m bookmarking this for next summer – I fear it might have snowed there by now with the heavy rains this morning and temps dropping to the 30s tonight. I totally agree, it has been a strange year. Flowers in the Sierras have no intention of stopping to bloom and the old snow, where usually there is no snow even in July, will probably stay till winter.
Love the Eye of Sauron, and the toilet with the view – priceless.

This is a great hike. BUT JK should know that its not a great hike for you. :) I’ve done this loop several times and I love the talus, the solitude and the different routes. BUT if your not into a “tiny” bit of DC, boulder hopping, and some vegetable scrambling its probably one you should leave be. ;)

I started hiking this summer for my health and I dreaded it. But after the first hike, I fell in love. Oh my gosh Ingunn – you are one amazing lady. I’m all for travelling by myself (and staying in hotels) but hiking and camping… not so much. But I can definitely see the allure of it. Jeg møtte mange andre (flere solo menn men ingen andre solo jenter) på dag 1 og 3, men ikke dag 2. Det er ikke mobildekning der, så for sikkerhets skyld så tok jeg med meg en Spot Satellite Messenger som kan tilkalle hjelp hvis det går skikkelig gæli.

Av dyr så er det både bjørn og fjelløver der, men sjansene for at et menneske blir angrepet av dem er så bittesmå at jeg nekter å la det holde meg igjen. :) Men jeg har bestemt at jeg ikke går alene mens det er mørkt, for det er da de er på jakt.

Jeg føler meg veldig komfortabel ute i naturen, så en gang i blandt er det deilig å være helt alene der ute, gjøre akkurat det jeg vil og vite at jeg klarer meg på egenhånd! :D

Jeg er imponert over at noen tar sånne turer helt alene, men det er kanskje ikke så uvanlig… Er det ikke litt skummelt? Eller farlig? Ville dyr og sånn…? Eller er det akkurat sånn som i den norske fjellheimen der man stadig møter andre mennesker på tur? Tviler på om jeg noen gang hadde dratt ut sånn helt solo. Men jeg fikk fjellstøvler til bursdagen min nylig, så ut på tur skal jeg nok! Sammen med noen… ;o)

I sign into my Tumblr account, and switch the dashboard from my main blog to the secondary blog, then I go to Account > Preferences > Customize your blog, but then it just takes me to the customization page for my main blog. Any way to customize my secondary blog, or should I just create a second account altogether?.

I really am truly sorry to hear the news…and I also wanted to say that the reason I read this post is that I too had a post dedicated to the mountains as my church. I too have had many hard years in Seattle and found my only solace in the mountains surrounding my home. And I too moved here in a deep depression that has still stuck with me even after marrying the most amazing man who agreed to have our small wedding in the very mountains that I made my home.

When I started learning photography I would get so upset that I would miss a beautiful sunset or a perfect Seattle summer day…and sometimes I still feel that way, but I discovered one thing: There is a spot on the express lanes over the Montlake Cut going north towards the U District in Seattle that when I pass it (which I do almost every day) looks right through the Fremont Bridge. When the sun is setting it lights up the entire space of water under the bridge causing it to be a beautiful orange that reflects the sky perfectly. Now there is no way for me to capture that photo as you can’t stop on the bridge without causing a major backup or police presence so this one shot…it’s all in my mind. And every day I get to see it if the conditions are right. I look forward to it, it’s my own little happy place that no one else can have and it makes up for the fact that I can’t share it with the world.

Long story made longer….try to find that one little happiness in your surroundings that you can’t share with anyone else and then build on that. That one beautiful view…

I would love to go to Norway some day! We just got back from a 2 week long motorcycle trip with our family. We rode through a lot of the North-eastern states and took a lot of back roads. It was beautiful….theres nothing like being with family!

Boo to being sad. I’ve been there before and it is not fun.

Have you looked into doing some volunteer work? I think that there are a lot of organizations that need consistant help, a few hours each week in the office or something. I think it would be nice to have someplace to go and people counting on you to help them – feeling valued is always good! Two organizations I think are great are the Washington Trails Association and Girls on the Run!

Well those photos sure made me smile. I don’t really know what to say but writing on your blog or in your scrapbook albums might help focus on today rather than tomorrow. Maybe revisit some of other hobbies (besides hiking) and get some new ones.

I understand depression. I suffered with it for most of my adult life. I have found ways to overcome and love myself. It is not always easy, but it can be done. You seem to have a great supporter in your hubby and that is really all you need. You are an awesome photographer and I love looking at your photos and reading your stories. Maybe you could publish?

I am so sorry you are struggling. I’ve had some death in my universe recently too. It really does make you FEEL every emotion. I’m with you–I don’t believe in a traditional god and I don’t go to church. But I feel the presence of a higher power when I am in nature. Swimming in a lake, hiking up a mountain, snowshoeing in the winter…I love it.

My friend just went to Goat Lake too (maybe even the same weekend – only a few sunny ones to choose from) and she said it was fabulous. They took a nice little swim as well. This weekend (today too – damn work) is shaping up to be a nice one. I hope you can enjoy it and get your vitamin d fix!

PS – I am sorry about the recent tragedy in Olso. I just wish all this senseless hatred would stop.

Sorry to hear your suffering again. After being in Alaska for 2 weeks and little sunshine I can appreciate a little more what you experience. I came home to Winter that is warmer (and sunnier) than the Alaskan summer. So hard that JK loves his work so much. At what point does health become more important? Hoping the Sun comes out and you can stock up before the season changes again.

I hear ya! It’s been a cold, rainy summer here in Southeast Alaska. It seems like we get the backlash of weather that you get there in Washington, but even more rain here! We get 14 FEET of precip where we live per year! I don’t mind the rain, but when you don’t see the sun for like a week and a half, it’s a big bummer!! I’m hoping for more sunshine your way!

I hear ya! This year has been BRUTAL. I went to Tucson in March and basked in the sunshine for a week. It helped me with the usual NW winter depression. But man, it’s mid-July! Where is the sunshine??

Hah! We descended Bean from the SW gully instead of the ridge route and hit the snow shelf I’m sure you guys did as well. We followed the moat to the end of the shelf and were able to get around the shelf. All of this with multi-day packs, which is always interesting in an unbalanced sort of way. :) But I do love Bean!

Hey – thanks for stopping by my (often-neglected) blog! I am going to be in Trondheim, starting mid-September (till about Christmas, and then again from mid-March to June – and back in Seattle in between). I’m am incredibly excited! I was in Norway a few summers ago (Oslo, hiking in Jotunheimen, and Bergen) and loved it! Where are you from?

With all of the things that you want to take on your camping backpacking , i would suggest that you simply take some clothing , rain gear & water. Too , in planning your outing , that you plan on ending your daily excersion at a holiday hostel or other suit.

Hey!!!! Don’t knock the dog album!! Asher has two of them!! ;)

I didn’t start scrapbooking until we lost our greyhound, Mercury. I started out by collecting – papers, embellishments, etc, stuff I thought would be good for an album about him. I ended up using a lot of that material making a book about Asher when we first got him – and that’s when I started scrapbooking! I did make Mercury an album later, which I love.

Love your layouts, as always!

every time I visit your blog, it makes me wanna pack up all my stuff and move to the west coast. i love the idea of having mountains and ocean all right there together — and the views, holy crap THE VIEWS!!! However, I’m deathly afraid of heights (and waaaaaaaaaaaaay out of shape) so I’m not sure just how much I’d take advantage of all the hiking opportunities…

WOW – love that you on hikes by yourself. Not sure I’d do that, but I do love taking the dogs on adventure walks. Looks absolutely beautiful. Love all the dogs in the group photo. So hard to find places here that allow you to take dogs. Most of the good walks are in the national parks where dogs are not allowed :-(.

Thank you for stopping by for a visit! Now I can follow you on your adventures. Your photos are gorgeous! Sorry to hear you had a few issues. We had so much rain it made for for perfect mosquito breeding grounds.

I have not done Caldron Lake and it is for the very reason you only went so far. I had an experience of slipping and falling down a steep slope and every since then, traverses on steep slopes are a nightmare for me, so I avoid them as much as possible.

I just have to tell you that I came across your blog last week and immediately read through the whole thing in one sitting. It’s amazing to me how similar we are in this regard (and others). I am a definite believer in “mountain therapy” as a moderator for depression. Unfortunately, after moving from Colorado to North Carolina (not the pretty part of the state), it has really been a struggle for me. Obviously I hate for others to deal with anxiety, depression, mood issues, etc. but it is comforting to know there are people like me out there and I’m not a total weirdo. :)

You’ve inspired me to get up off my lazy ass and start running again :) I took a six week break from my running, but after only a week, I’m almost right back to where I left off. Amazing how the body seems to remember it’s strengths. It hasn’t been easy, though, but I do feel great all day long after my runs (I run in the morning before the heat of the day). I’m glad to see that you’re still going strong and that you’re reaping the benefits of daily exercise. Yay us!

Fun trip – sorry about the veggie burger!

I am also doing Jillian’s 30-Day Shred! I am only on workout 5, I think – I am alternating with her Yoga Meltdown – and not doing anything at all, which I am sure really helps with my shredding…

Anyway – know what you mean about the arms – and the shoulders – after the workout! :)

But I had to agree with the part where you sat down. Every time I think about my favorite hike (Mount Timpanogos, in Utah) I think of the summit and all the sharp rock and how horrible it would be to fall. So yeah, I think I would have hung out with you. But seriously, that is a really cool hike.

I keep forgetting about the rock-licking! It must be the part of my brain that chooses to filter out the bad stuff (unless it’s too big for the filter, like skin welts and violent diarrhea). I forgot how bad that campsite was too, I just remember sleeping well and seeing the pine marten. :D

1) Ingunn, you were the one that insisted on the Rockies, not me. ;o)

2) I see no mention of the rock licking incident??? I mean it cured you as promised no???

3) Our Two Jack campsite was the WORST campsite ever. We had to drive down an awful desserted dirt road to get there, It was up a steep embankment which my truck could barely make it up, there was barely room for the truck and tents and I was falling downhill all night in my tent (read crooked ground).

4) Josie, you know you would have loved EVERY minute of it! :o)

Great shots Ingunn! I agree that it is one of the most beautiful places. Definitely worth camping to avoid the crowds that head up as a day hike. We were pretty much alone hiking up to Black Tusk!

I commend you with sharing your journey with all of us, Ingunn! I’m currently in my own spiral, and I’m not feeling all that great about it either. I stopped running about 2 months ago, and all I seem to ever do is sleep. I have no motivation to go out and do much of anything let along go running again. I, too, have to argue with myself to get out of bed in the mornings. It’s just no fun :( I hope your experiment goes well! Maybe you’ll motivate me to get off my ass.

Kjenner meg sååååå enormt igjen, og vet absolutt hva du sliter med.
Det er utrolig tungt når det står på, og det er overhodet ikke lett å dra seg opp av sofaen. Den suger virkelig energi.

Jeg selv er inne i en tung periode nå, og klarer ikke helt å ta tak i meg selv.
Kanskje jeg skulle ha gjort sånn som deg, for jeg vet at aktivitet hjelper på humøret og ikke minst migrene. Har jo nesten ikke migrene, og er ikke så trøtt lengre som jeg var før.

Jeg krysser fingrene for deg, og skal ta et grep selv nå. Skal satse på en gåtur hver dag ;)

WOW Ingunn. I knew you’d lost weight but I didn’t realize you had lost so much. You certainly look so much healthier and happier. Hope the exercise helps with your depression. I recently picked up running again as a way to lose weight and with 60 pounds to lose, that’s a lot of hard work on my body. Knees hurt, hip hurt, back aches, etc. But I’ve been working slowly and methodically to a place where I am “okay” with running in normal, padded shoes.

Then about one month ago my cousin told me to read Born to Run and I immediately went to the store and tried on some VFFs. I was in LOVE but on a budget, so they would have to wait. Fast forward to last week when the same cousin got my whole family to pitch in and buy me a gift certificate to buy a pair as a birthday gift/congrats on running a 5k/keep at it gift!!! I am SOOO EXCITED to go pick up a pair tonight or tomorrow!!!!

Anywho… it’s just cool to hear what you think about them! :)

Followed your comment on my Mt. Bandera TR to here. Funny thing, you went to Hawai’i to hike eh? I’m from Hawai’i and will be heading out there this weekend to visit family. No hiking though!

You have some excellent photographs here and it sounds like you really enjoyed your trip. That trail looks pretty dangerous but fun at the same time.

Håper det gjorde godt å være hjemme i Norge, men at det også var fint å komme tilbake til de to som ventet på deg hjemme. Men det er klart det tar tid å komme i scrappemodus igjen nå som Bobby er bort. Han var en viktig part i scrappingen din og i livet ellers såklart. En månedlig oppsummeringslayout er ihvertall en god ide! :)

Oh Ingunn, I am so sorry for you and JK! I know how hard it is to lose a pet. I know it sounds cheesy, but just remember that he’s no longer sick, he’s not in any pain, and he’s probably prancing around a field somewhere in heaven :o)

Also I have to say, I am a cat person, not a dog person, but I’ve often said that if I got a dog it would be an Italian Greyhound, and a lot of that is due to what I saw of you guys with Bobby :o)

Jeg vet hvor mye Bobby har betydd for dere, og selv om jeg aldri har truffet ham , så føler jeg på en måte at jeg kjenner ham litt. Slik er det når han har vært ditt store scrappeobjekt:)
