Sure wish I’d have seen this post before meeting up with you tonight, I’d have known about your veggie trail work, and Sue’s name, and about you being sick, and the incredible period you went without being sick, and that JK can do a cool jump for the camera, and that he’s teaching for the WAC, and that he’s done it before. And where the heck was that beautiful last picture taken?!

I can still hear my voice echoing in my head, so I know I got the better of our conversation tonight, but I did very much enjoy sharing the box with you guys. If you’re only gonna get up that thing once every couple of years, you can’t do much better than tonight, with perfect views under a sunny blue sky, a colorful sunset, a beautiful full moon, and a fast butt freezing glissade.

Hope we can do it again soon!

I’m just like you, I used to always get sick but lately I’ve been doing a lot better. I haven’t gotten sick sick, but have been really tired, which is almost like being sick. Hope you continue to stay healthy!

Jill: yikes, the injury was actually *from* shoveling? I’ve been thinking of the shovel as my kind, safe friend – I am much too clumsy to be let anywhere near a saw or pulaski. :o)

Anandi: yesterday I realized that it’s a little silly that I willingly spend whole work days shoveling dirt on a trail, but I’m too lazy to spend an hour weeding my overgrown front yard.

Hey good for you for volunteering with WTA! I had a shoulder injury from shoveling years ago, so can’t do that. But maybe something else, went to their open house a couple months ago, good folks and intend to get more involved. Beautiful photos as usual.

Wow you hit a fantastic winter day on Hood! Love Timberline, grew up east of Portland and learned to ski on the mountain. Backpacked around the mountain on the Timberline Trail (or is called the Skyline Trail? Been a few years!) when I was a teenager, started and ended at the lodge and circumnavigated the mountain. Spectacular overnights at Elk Cove, Cloud Cap, and more. Been up to just below the summit at base of Crater Rock and skied back down to the lodge, and done lots of summer skiing on the Palmer Snowfield. Wonderfully situated new friends! Hope you get to enjoy many more hikes/outings on and around Hood.

This was very straightforward, we just walked straight up! :) Are their marked snowshoe trails farther down the mountain? We were originally planning on going to Trillium Lake, but the weather was sooo good that we might as well go high up on the mountain…plus I really wanted to see the Timberline Lodge – now I have to watch The Shining again!

I haven’t really done a lot of exploring around Timberline because so much of it is considered backcountry and I’m more of a “follow a trail” kind of hiker. One of these days with an experienced guide, I’d love to try though!

That’s a lot of hiking for not doing as much hiking! I applaud how much you get out and take advantage of the wonderful trips and trails here in the Northwest and elsewhere. I did Labyrinth years ago, recall it was a pretty steep and not very well maintained trail. But the view! Hoping to get out and do some more this year with the foot feeling better, and you’re reminding me of some places to go. Thanks!

Helt klart en bedre ide enn å prøve å scrappe alt fra alle feriene som jeg har forsøkt i åresvis uten hell :) Har jo ettehvert innsett at det ikke går, og forsøker å komme meg rundt på annen måte.

Gøy å høre at du også liker veldig godt å scrappe ferieminner. Vi er ikke så mange som lager ordentlige feriealbum synes det som… så nå gleder jeg meg ekstra til å se hva du lager!

P.S Nydelig det grønne papiret. Er det også Studio Calico kit?

What a great idea, to hike for the sunrise! Only done that once in my life I think, when we summited Mt. Adams. Left our tent at the 9,000-foot-level around 1 a.m. and got to the summit just ahead of the sunrise, spectacular! Even saw a brilliant shooting star streak across the sky near the summit in the predawn glow. But then, Rattlesnake Ledge also would be a wonderful spot to view a sunrise. But I would be wary walking around up there on the cliff! Anyway, I live too far west for a quick jaunt to the foothills for this. Maybe this summer.

We assume the guy was drunk. The cops said he had a couple of warrants out on him already.

It was interesting going from the accident to driving on St. John – left side (but in a “normal” car), roller-coaster roads, hairpin turns, donkey traffic jams…

wow, what a beautiful day, gorgeous photos! And that shot of paradise, can’t believe how deep the snow is! I stayed there last summer and hung out on the deck that is covered in about 10 feet of snow or more.

As always, I’m blown away by your amazing pictures. That’s crazy you were able to get a photo of snowflakes!

I haven’t been to Rainier since I was kid (grew up in Seattle) and never in the snow. I’d love to try it someday. We usually go to Bend for snow. Mt.Bachelor is great! So many good trails for all abilities. Mt. Hood is good because it’s so close to Portland but there’s more skiing than snowshoeing up there.

Present has been my theme for the past year. I used to always focus on my future plans and what has already happened, but didn’t pay attention to the present. I’m getting better at not worrying so much about things and just enjoying the moment, but it’s still work.

I like that word – it’s similar to mine which is ‘mindfulness’. And LOVE that last photo. I keep wanting to try cross country skiing but I guess I need to wait until the kiddos are a bit bigger so we can either bring them or leave them behind for a day (or even better a weekend!)

PRESENT my constant theme. It’s a struggle, but in some moments I’m really there (here). Spectacular photos as usual. I did that ski trip years ago on a similar day. While I’ve not done much ski touring for years now (mostly downhill now), I did get out on skate skis for the first time yesterday on the Iron Horse Trail at Snoqualmie Pass/Hyak. A beautiful day and I can tell I’ll do it more. However, I would NOT attempt to go up and down Amabilis Mountain on skate skis!

I LOVE these, and love Cathy Z’s books, even though I don’t even make layouts. Ok, I’ve made two total. Maybe someday I’ll make more.

Gosh I wish that I was good at scrapbooking, or scrapping. Have an idea to put together a scrapbook to send to my friends in Italy for a Christmas gift. But not sure I can invest the time, etc. to get it done in time. Some are so beautiful!
BTW not sure if you got out for a walk last Wednesday/Thursday but they were stellar, beautiful days! I hiked on Orcas Island while visiting some friends (blog post), glorious! Now I’m down with a bad cold. Hope you’re feeling better.

Delurking to say I’m sorry about your pain problem. I know how scary and frustrating it can be to feel pain and not have an explanation for it. I have just recently recovered from mystery pain in the groin/pelvic area – the doctors were never able to diagnose it. I ended up trying just about anything anyone thought might help (acupuncture, shiatsu, massage, physical therapy, diet changes). Ultimately after about 6 months it finally started getting better and now (9 months on) it rarely bothers me. So even though it might seem like this has already lasted forever, it may still just take a little more time. For what it’s worth I think that what helped me was swimming, pelvic floor excercises, and reducing my anxiety (meditation). If you’re not already better, I hope you start to feel better soon!

I am not overly fond of downhills and last week I went to a cross fit class with a lot of squats so my runs this weekend were really painful when it came to the down hill places. I am hoping to get to the Woodinville section of the powerline trail in the next few months to get more hill work done. Love your photos!

Ingunn, unfortunately sugar is an inflammatory food (well, not sure it’s really food, but something to ingest). I have a tremendous sweet tooth, too. Hey, saw you on Strava – cool! I haven’t actually posted anything there, just signed up to watch Scotty’s numbers. That’s a great time for that route on Tiger – that section line is steep, and your exit down the main 3 and past the bus is soooo long. You’re right about the downhill bits taking time and practice. I always forget to breathe coming down and my stitch alarm goes off each time to remind me. Deep breaths, fast exhales, and arms above my head usually clears it up quickly. Best of luck!

Brianna, that’s from Mount Rainier looking towards the Tatoosh Range – I haven’t been to Goat Rocks yet, but from the photos I’ve seen it looks wonderful.

Rachel, it’s crazy how easy it is to stay away from something when you *know* it’s going to make you feel bad to eat it. It almost makes me wish chocolate had the same effect on me. ;^)

Jill, you must have been running around all over the place back then, because you seem pretty darn active now, based on your blog! I should look into anti-inflammatory eating. I wonder how much turmeric I would have to consume to make up for all the sugar I eat.. :o)

Glad to hear you’re feeling better. I’m a veteran of muscular-skeletal issues (autoimmune stuff too) that have slowed me down and prevented me from doing the number and level of hikes that I did when I was in my twenties and thirties (like you have shown on your beautiful blog). But I did play with diet and worked with a nutritionist to eat an anti-inflammatory way, and gluten was on the list of things to cut out. I of course have rebelled against that “abstinence” off and on over the years, but just yesterday I made another pledge to cut out wheat and sugar. Day 2. The Orcas run sounds great! Wish I could run again but that ship has sailed, don’t want to risk the flare-ups.

Ah, what stunning, crisp pictures, love them! Sorry to hear about the pain thing, i hope they can get to the source of it. oh, and I totally believe in nutritional changes for health, I don’t eat gluten either (and minimise dairy), they both just made my gut very uncomfortable. I’m also a fan of seeing naturopaths who specialise in a more holistic (body, life, nutrition) approach to diagnosis if you are at all inclined that way. Happy hiking in the meantime though!

Just wanted to send a quick thank you. You’ve been an inspiration this past summer to a number of hikes me and a friend have been on in the PNW.

We did a one way trip up Panorama Ridge in BC, camping overnight on the ridge. And we just returned from topping out at the epic DipTop Gap. We even made a summit attempt at Mt. Daniels a few weeks back, but fear got the best of us as we made our way along the hairline ridge and decided to back down.

Keep the photos and the trips coming. Maple Pass and Wing Lake look to be our final backpacking adventure in mid-October.

Girl, you are making me nostalgic for my late 20s/early 30s when I hiked and skied all over the Cascades with passionate abandon. Before the onset of my chronic Achilles tendinitis and plantar fascitis, I was all over the map with my boots and skis and Norwegian/Swedish blend boyfriend. They used to call me Motor Mouse. I miss those days! Alas don’t have nearly the photos you do to document all those adventures; otherwise my blog would be a lot more adventure-focused. Haven’t been up on the snowfield below Muir with my tele skis in too many years.

Thanks for the vicarious adventures.

That cabin is cool. We did a snowshoe trail in Bend and there was a little cabin with a wood stove out in the middle of nowhere. It was a great place to rest and get dry/warm.

That photo of the fox is amazing! You take wonderful photos and seem to get really lucky catching these creatures in the wild!

Annie: I carry the 60D around my neck in a regular camera bag (I’m considering trying a harness or something because that camera is HEAVY) and I usually bring a wide-angle lens in my pack. I’ve only dropped my camera once, luckily it damaged our cheapest lens (50mm) and not the camera itself…

Lisa: you should see the kids! They are so cute and gorgeous that it’s all I can do not to snuggle them.

Weather gloomy but oh those wildflowers! You were lucky to be there when they were at their peak! Love Sun Mountain regardless, spent many happy weekends there X-C skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and hot tubbing with friends in years past. Love how much you get out, like I used to in my twenties and early thirties before chronic tendonitis set in. Now it’s called pain management and doing as much as I can do, cheers.

I think it’s been a year or so since my last page…and I haven’t unpacked my scrapbook stuff yet, but I am making an office for it. I still come up with layout and content ideas all the time, but I just can’t find the motivation to sit down and actually make an album. I applaud you for how much hiking and getting out you are doing here in the Northwest! You put many of us “natives” to shame! Beautiful photos, too. I also see value in returning to my favorite hikes over and over. I treasure seeing how things change (or stay the same) through the year, getting to know a place intimately, letting it sink into your bones. I used to do as much hiking when I was your age(ish) before chronic tendinitis set me back and keeps me from doing as much as I’d like. Enjoy!

Wow! Your home is beautiful! I am loving that kitchen and the wood beams along the ceiling. I’m with you about a deck – Ours is my favorite thing about our house. Nothing beats coming home from a long day at work and lounging outside.

Kelsie: I hope to do the whole thing, at the very least I would love to do another solo section like last year!

k: We didn’t get to do as much as we would have liked up there since I was sick, but I recommend taking the ferry from Reine and walking to Bunesstranda – it should be an easy walk for most people. We took the bus from Å to Svolvær and it was a BEAUTIFUL drive. I would have loved to have a car so we could have stopped wherever we wanted for photos.. Hot tip: bring sleep masks, the midnight sun gets annoying after a while. ;^)

I’m going to Lofoten in June with my parents. My mom isn’t a huge hiker but she likes to walk and do easy hikes. Any suggestions on what to see when we are up there (currently only have train tickets to Bodø and plans to rent a car once we get onto the island so we could do/go anywhere!)?

Aaw, thanks Alex! We just moved into a new house, and after packing up all my boxes of scrapbooking stuff (sooo many boxes), I think I’m just going to get rid of most of the frilly stuff I never use and just keep the basics!

You’re going to love Design Your Life, I took it a couple of years ago and it was amazing! I usually lay my whole design out in Photoshop first, then print the text part on cardstock and the photos on photo paper. I try to plan ahead so I’ll have a couple of different pages to print photos for, that way I can squeeze as many as I can onto one sheet of photo paper.

I know your blog is more about hiking now, but I absolutely love your scrapbooking style! I, like you said in an older post, am afraid of looking back at this hobby ten years from now and thinking that the layouts are kitchy, messy etc.. with all the embelishents and things. As a result, I have piles of scrapbook stuff and nothing accomplished because I feel overwhelmed. I really like your clean, simple style.
Anyway, to help me along, I signed up for the Design Your Life Class. There are some odd picture sizes required and I was just wondering how you printed them out? I don’t have a photo printer. Did you resize them in photoshop? Cut them by hand? I was just looking for some guidance. Thanks!

I xc skiied once and I didn`t like the downhill parts. I felt like I had a lot less control than I do on actual downhill skis.

XC skiing is so much fun. I wish I could do it better. Going downhill is more than a challenge for me too. I could uses some serious lessons here.

This is GREAT! I truly believe that no child who spends time in nature will be fussy. There is magic in the outdoors and even babies know it.
And look at all that snow! There is nothing even close in our mountains. We might get some snow… showers tomorrow. Not enough.

Oh my gosh! How cute it Wellie! I love his argyle sweater. Jason is anti-dog clothing, although Thea does have a nice coat. Her hair is shorter and she’s quite a bit thinner than our lab Bailey, so she kind of needs it. And I agree about that first picture of him – Very cool!

Glad to hear you made the most of the snow storm. We finally have snow here, so I’m hoping to give the new snowshoes a try soon.

I’ve had over-hydration issues ever since I had mono when I was fifteen. Seriously, I drink insaaane amounts of water, which gets annoying when I’m hiking or backpacking. The doc keeps checking to see if I have diabetes, but nope, I’m just always thirsty!

I love, love, love runs like that. There is something special about running in nature too. I believe (though I might be totally wrong on that one) that running is great for clearing sinuses. At least it works for me.
I am fine without water for runs shorter than 1.5hrs (unless it’s really hot). Sure, we need to be hydrated but I am thinking that a lot of ‘proper’ hydration advice is fueled by water bottling companies.

Everest would be incredible! You should definitely do it!! Not only would it be an amazing experience, I’m guessing the courage to go it alone would be inspiring in itself.

I totally agree, it has been a strange year. Flowers in the Sierras have no intention of stopping to bloom and the old snow, where usually there is no snow even in July, will probably stay till winter.
Love the Eye of Sauron, and the toilet with the view – priceless.

This is a great hike. BUT JK should know that its not a great hike for you. :) I’ve done this loop several times and I love the talus, the solitude and the different routes. BUT if your not into a “tiny” bit of DC, boulder hopping, and some vegetable scrambling its probably one you should leave be. ;)

I started hiking this summer for my health and I dreaded it. But after the first hike, I fell in love. We’ve done only a few because of time constraints but my friends and I always look forward for the next free weekend. When I found your blog I was so excited. everything about this blog is beautiful. Oh my gosh Ingunn – you are one amazing lady. I’m all for travelling by myself (and staying in hotels) but hiking and camping… not so much. But I can definitely see the allure of it. Being to able to exactly what you want when you want. So glad you were able to do this – despite the mirgrane – looks like you had gorgeous weather and got to enjoy some beautiful scenery.

Jeg møtte mange andre (flere solo menn men ingen andre solo jenter) på dag 1 og 3, men ikke dag 2. Det er ikke mobildekning der, så for sikkerhets skyld så tok jeg med meg en Spot Satellite Messenger som kan tilkalle hjelp hvis det går skikkelig gæli.

Av dyr så er det både bjørn og fjelløver der, men sjansene for at et menneske blir angrepet av dem er så bittesmå at jeg nekter å la det holde meg igjen. :) Men jeg har bestemt at jeg ikke går alene mens det er mørkt, for det er da de er på jakt.

Jeg føler meg veldig komfortabel ute i naturen, så en gang i blandt er det deilig å være helt alene der ute, gjøre akkurat det jeg vil og vite at jeg klarer meg på egenhånd! :D

Jeg er imponert over at noen tar sånne turer helt alene, men det er kanskje ikke så uvanlig… Er det ikke litt skummelt? Eller farlig? Ville dyr og sånn…? Eller er det akkurat sånn som i den norske fjellheimen der man stadig møter andre mennesker på tur? Tviler på om jeg noen gang hadde dratt ut sånn helt solo. Men jeg fikk fjellstøvler til bursdagen min nylig, så ut på tur skal jeg nok! Sammen med noen… ;o)

I really am truly sorry to hear the news…and I also wanted to say that the reason I read this post is that I too had a post dedicated to the mountains as my church. I too have had many hard years in Seattle and found my only solace in the mountains surrounding my home. And I too moved here in a deep depression that has still stuck with me even after marrying the most amazing man who agreed to have our small wedding in the very mountains that I made my home.

When I started learning photography I would get so upset that I would miss a beautiful sunset or a perfect Seattle summer day…and sometimes I still feel that way, but I discovered one thing: There is a spot on the express lanes over the Montlake Cut going north towards the U District in Seattle that when I pass it (which I do almost every day) looks right through the Fremont Bridge. When the sun is setting it lights up the entire space of water under the bridge causing it to be a beautiful orange that reflects the sky perfectly. Now there is no way for me to capture that photo as you can’t stop on the bridge without causing a major backup or police presence so this one shot…it’s all in my mind. And every day I get to see it if the conditions are right. I look forward to it, it’s my own little happy place that no one else can have and it makes up for the fact that I can’t share it with the world.

Long story made longer….try to find that one little happiness in your surroundings that you can’t share with anyone else and then build on that. That one beautiful view…

I would love to go to Norway some day! We just got back from a 2 week long motorcycle trip with our family. We rode through a lot of the North-eastern states and took a lot of back roads. It was beautiful….theres nothing like being with family!

Boo to being sad. I’ve been there before and it is not fun.

Have you looked into doing some volunteer work? I think that there are a lot of organizations that need consistant help, a few hours each week in the office or something. I think it would be nice to have someplace to go and people counting on you to help them – feeling valued is always good! Two organizations I think are great are the Washington Trails Association and Girls on the Run!

I understand depression. I suffered with it for most of my adult life. I have found ways to overcome and love myself. It is not always easy, but it can be done. I am so sorry you are struggling. I’ve had some death in my universe recently too. It really does make you FEEL every emotion. I’m with you–I don’t believe in a traditional god and I don’t go to church. But I feel the presence of a higher power when I am in nature. Swimming in a lake, hiking up a mountain, snowshoeing in the winter…I love it.

My friend just went to Goat Lake too (maybe even the same weekend – only a few sunny ones to choose from) and she said it was fabulous. They took a nice little swim as well. This weekend (today too – damn work) is shaping up to be a nice one. I hope you can enjoy it and get your vitamin d fix!

PS – I am sorry about the recent tragedy in Olso. I just wish all this senseless hatred would stop.

Sorry to hear your suffering again. After being in Alaska for 2 weeks and little sunshine I can appreciate a little more what you experience. I came home to Winter that is warmer (and sunnier) than the Alaskan summer. So hard that JK loves his work so much. At what point does health become more important? Hoping the Sun comes out and you can stock up before the season changes again.

I hear ya! It’s been a cold, rainy summer here in Southeast Alaska. It seems like we get the backlash of weather that you get there in Washington, but even more rain here! We get 14 FEET of precip where we live per year! I don’t mind the rain, but when you don’t see the sun for like a week and a half, it’s a big bummer!! I’m hoping for more sunshine your way!

I hear ya! This year has been BRUTAL. I went to Tucson in March and basked in the sunshine for a week. It helped me with the usual NW winter depression. But man, it’s mid-July! Where is the sunshine??

Another gorgeous hiking location! Despite the beauty, I would’ve been a “weenie,” too ;) I have to say, Wellie must be the most incredible hiker I’ve ever seen. How did he manage up the mountain?

Hah! We descended Bean from the SW gully instead of the ridge route and hit the snow shelf I’m sure you guys did as well. We followed the moat to the end of the shelf and were able to get around the shelf. All of this with multi-day packs, which is always interesting in an unbalanced sort of way. :) But I do love Bean!

Hey – thanks for stopping by my (often-neglected) blog! I am going to be in Trondheim, starting mid-September (till about Christmas, and then again from mid-March to June – and back in Seattle in between). I’m am incredibly excited! I was in Norway a few summers ago (Oslo, hiking in Jotunheimen, and Bergen) and loved it! Where are you from?

Happy belated birthday! I love looking at your hiking pics – I’ve been many of those places but my pictures don’t do them as much justice as yours :)

With all of the things that you want to take on your camping backpacking , i would suggest that you simply take some clothing , rain gear & water. Too , in planning your outing , that you plan on ending your daily excersion at a holiday hostel or other suit.

I visited Norway some years back and LOVED it. OK, it was in the summer, it was a dry and sunny summer too.
Love the photos.
I think you should challenge yourself and process them by 2016 though.

I love your pages I have them book marked on two peas as well, it’s great to see you scrapping again! I love your page on Bobby. Hey!!!! Don’t knock the dog album!! Asher has two of them!! ;)

I didn’t start scrapbooking until we lost our greyhound, Mercury. I started out by collecting – papers, embellishments, etc, stuff I thought would be good for an album about him. I ended up using a lot of that material making a book about Asher when we first got him – and that’s when I started scrapbooking! I did make Mercury an album later, which I love.
